Most will accuse Waking Life of exercising pretentious philosophical gymnastics or simply of pointless pontification. It seemed genius to me, but I'm a dog who's lost all his hair and his brain cells from watching too much TV, er, movies. Or maybe I've obtained a higher level of being from learning about life from film. Yeah... that's it... that's the ticket.
Anyway, it's Richard Linklater again directing. Also, director Steven Soderbergh is in it (acting) as is Ethan Hawke. Well... "in it" I'm not so sure... their cartoon versions are "in it." As he did with the movie I hate, A Scanner Darkly, Linklater used (developed for this film actually) rotoscoping to animate the live action scenes. Pretty cool effect. Not sure it adds much to the film though.
Everyone compares this with the cult film, My Dinner with Andre, due to the long passages of dialog about life... but this movie differs to the extent that it actually fades in and out of "reality." Speaking of... I'm fading.
FilmBender is Funny Movie Reviews, and if you haven't seen rotoscoping, then you should check out this trailer to see it in action (or in distraction).
